WATER ANGELS!

A relaxing Sunday afternoon frolicking at Canal Park's Splash area.

Pink flamingo snazzy suit courtesy of Target.  Looks just like a Lilly but for a quarter of the price.  Perfect!

Summer, Summer, Summertime

1. POP! Tee by Appaman (old but similar here and fun one here), 2. Striped Skirt by Pink Chicken (old but very similar one here), 3. Sun-San Saltwater Sandals bought at The Purple Goose.

Time to sit back and unwind....

This song is playing over and over in my head.  Summer is almost here.  My kiddos have just a little over 2 weeks left until summer break.   And I'm not sure who is more excited, them or me!  You may have noticed that things have been bit quiet over here on hopscotch's playground. With baseball doubleheaders, ballet recitals, and the dreaded exam for my licensing (eek!), there has been little time leftover for fashion chit chat.  However, this outfit Ms. T is sporting has me buzzing with excitement for summer fun!

16 more days and then it is two months of glorious sun, heat, pool, beach, sundresses, flip flops, home-made ice cream, fresh tomatoes, blueberries, yummy cocktails and beach-y reads. Yippee! I love, love, love summer.  What are you looking forward to?

No Party Poopers Here!

Headed to the beach or pool this summer with your bebe's? Well, you don't want to be THAT parent who closes down the pool for a lil' "accident", so make sure your bag is stocked with these adorable swim diapers from The Honest Co.

The Honest Co. was co-founded by Jessica Alba and offers baby products that are safe, eco-friendly, stylish and affordable.  They offer regular diaper service where you select your favorite patterned diapers and they ship them directly to your door!  Plus, they have created a line of bath and body products for your baby that are natural and non-toxic.  But what caught my eye were these swim diapers.  Not only are they cute and stylish (love the whale pattern!) but they are re-usuable. Extra points for being a friend to the environment too!

Moody Blues...

And "tickled pink" or "green with envy".  Yes, retro mood jewelry is back in style!  Or perhaps, it never really went out of style.  In any case, Ms. T's favorite new accessory is her mood bracelet.  I picked hers up on a whim at one of our favorite boutiques, The Purple Goose.  She has been fascinated with it since day one and has finally committed to memory what each color's mood is (blue is actually calm, green is sensitive, etc...).  It also has caused quite the stir in her classroom with her fellow girlfriends.  So much so, that we headed back to the store this past weekend to pick up extras for upcoming birthday parties. The bracelets come in three designs; heart, star and flower blossom.  The girls LOVE them.  I think they are pretty groovy too!

DVF  GapKids

1. Romper in Egyptian Turquoise, 2. Bathing suit in Pixie Dust Pink, 3. Diaper Bag4. Wrap Dress in DVF's signature heart print, 5. Baby 3-piece Set, 6. Baby Espadrilles, 7. Colorblock Sandals in Pixie Dust Pink, 8. Wrap Dress in Lush Green, 9. Zebra Tee, 10. Printed Shorts in Multi Floral.

Last week DVF's second collaboration with GapKids hit the stores.  Designed for girls newborn to 14 years old, the new Explorers Collection was inspired by African exotic patterns and wild animal prints.  The collection comprises of her iconic wrap dresses, flirty rompers, fun graphic tees to pair with skinny jeans and even a diaper bag for the Mommy-to-be.  What I love most is that the girl wrap dresses include a matching pair of knit shorts; perfect for when they are monkeying around on the playground!  The wrap dresses would also make a smart choice for a graduation party or spring wedding.

And should you wish to be as stylish as your little fashionista, a similar limited edition wrap dress is available here.  Like mother, like daughter!

Closet Raider

Tea Collection Cape Lily Dress, purchased at Dawn Price Baby, Head Dress Silk Headband found in Mommy's closet (similar scarf headbands here).
While I was busy packing school lunches yesterday morning, Ms. T decided to peruse my closet.  And this is what she found: an old silk headband, probably ca. 2003.  She insisted on wearing it. To school.  She chose to style it with her new Tea dress.  I relented because, truth be told, it actually looked pretty darn cute on her. Probably better than it ever did on me!

Does your Mini Me raid your closet?  Borrow bling from your jewelry box?  Teeter around the house in your Jimmy Choos? Or do you remember raiding your Mom's closet when you were little?  Well, then, don't be shy! Tell us about it.  Leave a comment below.

Happy....

I saw these adorable onesies and tees on Daily Candy today.  Designed by BioME 5, these certified organic shirts are adorned with a modern take on the traditional animal alphabet. Perfect for a baby shower or a birthday gift.  They even make tees for grown-up animal lovers too.

"Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink."
                                                              Lilly Pulitzer

Here at Hopscotch Sketchpad we were saddened to hear of the passing of Lilly Pulitzer this week.  From Palm Beach juicer to fashion icon, Lilly is as much in style today as it was 50 years ago.  Her style represents everything I love; sunshine, beach and a huge dose of FUN!  As you can see, Ms. T has been an adoring fan during the first five years of her charmed life. And Mr. C has even been known to sport a pair of Lilly swim trunks.

In celebration of Lilly's colorful life, we are giving away a Lilly iPhone 4 or 5 Cover ($30 value), in your print of choice, to one random winner.*  A perfect accessory for your spring wardrobe!  Our favorite is the Chiquita Bonita print shown here:

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Spring Break!

Throwback Thursday: Varsity Jackets

Not just for high school and college athletes anymore, the Varsity or Letterman Jacket is making a comeback!  I spotted this one last fall at H & M and had to get it for Mr. C since it already had his monogram.  It was made for him!

But this classic is still showing up on the runways and celebrities (Rihanna seen here!) are rocking them out.  I think these sporty jackets are here to stay.  Fortunately, the style has trickled down for the youngsters too.  The jackets look very smart when paired with vintage washed jeans or a flirty skirt for girls.  Plus they make the perfect layer for this temperamental in-between Spring weather.  Here are a few choices for your lil' prepsters. They will be too cool for school!

1.Gap Kids Varsity Jacket $36.95, 2. Dollhouse Girls Varsity Jacket in Hot Pink or Olympian Blue $42, 3. DC Boys Hooded Varsity Jacket $49.954. H & M Polka Dot Jacket $29.95 (not a Letterman Jacket but the cut is retro and has a very "Grease" vibe.  It's darling!)

The Dynamic Duo

Tired of the constant battles and tearful pleas during bath time brushing?  Always late for school due to tangled hair tantrums?  Here comes the Knot Genie to the rescue!

Believe me, I was skeptical in the beginning.  But after testing out this detangling brush for the past two weeks, I can attest that it is pretty awesome.  No more fussing, whining, or fighting!   Made for all hair types, it can be used wet or dry.  Although the company recommends not using it on curly hair that is dry, I still use it on Ms. T's curly mop in the mornings.  I just make sure to liberally apply detangling spray.

And speaking of detangling sprays, we have tried the gamut from five and dime to fancy salon products and we keep coming back to Suave Kids Twirlin' Swirlberry Detangler.  It works quickly, smells pretty and doesn't weigh down Ms. T's hair.  And since we use it at least once a day, you can't beat the bargain price.  I have picked it up for as little as $1.98 at Target on a recent trip.  You can even buy it in pack of 6 at Amazon (here).

You can purchase the Knot Genie locally at The Purple Goose or online.  I promise you it is well worth it.  Brushing is now a breeze.

Are there other kid beauty products that your family can't live without?  Tell us in the comments section!

Neon Pop + Grey

Neon colors, so bright and trendy this spring season (and last).  They are colors that I'm not usually drawn to.  However, while browsing the clearance racks at Target this week, this adorable tunic top caught my eye.  First off, I love the saying "Always Smile".  It's so Ms. T. Secondly, I think the mellow combination of neon with grey makes it easier on the eye; it's the right amount of pop without being too blinding. And, of course, I could not pass up on the playful scarf with neon Pom Pom fringe for only $7.99! Especially after I recently discovered a scarf in Ms. T's school bag that she said she was "borrowing". The best part is that this entire outfit (minus the shoes and headband) cost me less than 20 buckaroos! Actually, $16.45 to be exact.

This ensemble has given me a change of heart.  I'm loving the neon pops of color especially when paired with a neutral, like the grey above.  Here are a few more fun and vibrant pieces to add some pop to your little darling's wardrobe.  I think I may need to find the maxi dress in my size!
1. Crewcuts Girls' Bow Tank in Neon Clover, 2. Paper Doll Colorblock Maxi, 3. Crewcuts Girls' Mila Ballet Flats in Chambray, 4. Old Navy Neon Trim Cardi.

Spring Forward

Nothing quite says Spring like fresh pedicures and pretty sandals!

Converse  Marimekko

Debuting this month for spring, Marimekko's new bold and bright collection for Converse! Inspired by some of their more iconic 1960's prints, these patterns are just as fitting for this season's trends of blooms and polka dots.  And strawberries have never been so stylish!

The collection is available at select Marimikko stores, online here and at Converse.  Sadly, the sneakers are only available in Women sizes.  But, hey, "big girls" just wanna have fun too!

Hello, Yellow!

What is your favorite color to welcome in Spring?  Leave a comment.

Party Animal

Yesterday it was my other baby's birthday.  The Notorious P.U.G., Mr. Buster, turned ONE! We couldn't let the day go by without celebrating our beloved pup.  We hit up our favorite shop, Metro Mutts, and purchased some goodies.  Ms. T insisted that Buster needed to have the flower "boutonniere" for his harness (I don't think Buster agrees that tough guys DO wear flowers).  I even baked some "pupcakes" (recipe here) for him.  I wish I could have captured the shot of him eating his cake. He inhaled it in two bites.

The photo montage above is a year in the life of this hyper and pugnacious, but incredibly sweet and lovable, ball of fur (did I mention lots and lots of fur?).  It's been a crazy and fun year. I just need to remember to keep my good shoes hidden away. Oh, and Barbie dolls too!

Romper Room

No longer just for the baby and preschooler set, rompers are making a comeback.  This season's selection is full of cheerful prints, spunky polka dots and nautical-inspired style. One does not need a "magic mirror" to tell you that these are all about fun and play!

"I'm Just A Girl,

1. HM "Gwen Burst" Tee, 2. HM Skinny Pants in Coral Blosson, 3. Target White Glitter Belt.

Take a good look at me..."  Oh yeah, can't get this No Doubt song out of my head since seeing the totally hip and cool new 2013 spring line from Harajuku Mini (HM from here on out).  If you have been following this blog, you probably realize that we're big fans of HM. I also will admit to having a teensy-weensy girl crush on Gwen too. I'm pretty sure she was born cool!

Anyways, the styles that hit stores last week are F-U-N.  I love the mix of girly with a bit of grungy street attitude.  And the boys' assortment is bold and radical.  From the line-up below you can see it was difficult to choose which outfit was the cutest. But I thought the one above really personified Ms. T's sense of style.  Who does that Supergirl remind you of?! She will be rocking out in the school corridors, no doubt!
1. HM Girls' Letterman Jacket (I think I may need to go back for this one!), 2. HM "Black Cat" Dress, 3. HM Toddler Ruffled Swimsuit4. HM Toddler 2-Piece Legging & Tunic Set, 5. HM Infant Boys Romper, 6. HM Girls "Azalea" Dress, 7. HM Toddler Boys Tee.

Hooked on U!

Ms. T's Valentine's Day Outfit: Dress: Crewcut Anchor Dress (last season's, but similar ones here and here). Sweater: Ribbon Sweater from Nordstroms (old, similar one here). Belt: Xhilaration from Target, Set of 3 Glitter Belts in Azores Rose (awesome deal!). Boots: Nordstrom "Cassidy" Cowboy Boots in Metallic Pink. Tights: Gap Kids Chevron Tights in Ivory Frost (on sale now!). Headband: Anchor Headband from The Purple Goose. Jewelry: Candy Heart Necklace made by Hopscotch Sketchpad.

Since having kids, Valentine's Day has become more special.  I really enjoy baking fun treats for my kids and buying or making them sweet little trinkets for the holiday.  This year I decided to try these yummy Candy Heart Necklaces.  I found this idea on this fun site called "Cute Food for Kids" (the how-to here).  Aren't they too cute?  Even my 10 year old wore his to school!  I wonder if they will make it till lunch time....

As for Ms. T's V-day outfit, I thought it would be fun to come up with something a bit offbeat. I love this dress I got her on clearance at the end of the summer from Crewcuts. But she's only worn it probably two times. I thought Valentine's Day was the perfect opportunity to bring it out of the closet again (nautically-inspired trends are huge right now).  So we paired it with a ribbon cardigan, replaced the rope belt with a sparkly pink skinny and topped it all off with a red ribbon anchor headband.  It was Ms. T's snazzy idea to wear her pink cowboy boots.  I think she looks pretty fabulous!

Hope everyone has a lovely Valentine's Day!

XOXO, Hopscotch Sketchpad

Pink: It's Not Just for Girls!

The blog was pretty quiet last week and the pictures above offer a good clue as to why. Ms. T's brother, Mr. C, had a little basketball injury and fractured a growth plate in his ankle. But what is even more interesting is the choice of color that was chosen for his cast.  Yep, that's right, a ballsy neon pink!

I'll admit I was a bit nervous about his choice; were the kids (boys) at school going to tease him?  But from all the signatures and doodles on his cast, it's evident that he was confident in his choice and proudly showed it off (check out Mr. Buster photobombing my close-up cast shot; always has to be the center of attention!).

Which brings me to my point, is pink really only for girls?  Most definitely not!  I actually think boys (& men) look very handsome in pink.  Below I have rounded up some of my favorite pink duds for the dudes.  Whether bold or subtle, your guys will be in the pink!

1. Crewcuts Boys' The Best Tee, 2. Billabong Iconic Boardshorts @ Zappos, 3. Nike Kids Jr Nike5 Bomba (just a swoosh of pink!)4. Vineyard Vines Antigua Gingham Shirt (Mr. C's pick), 5. Crewcuts Urbanears Headphones in Grape, 6. Crewcuts Chino Shorts in Dusty Berry, 7. Old Navy Pink Plaid Shirt, 8. Gap Kids Slouch Skinny Jeans in Dark Wash (they also carry PINK! skinny jeans for boys, you can find them here!). 9. Vans in Neon Pop/Frost Grey.

Paint the classroom red...

Or pink!  If you're still in need of a sweet gift for your little Valentine but you don't want something sugary sweet, these nail polish sets are a great find.  Piggy Paint, created by a Mom, is a kid-friendly, non-toxic and hypoallergenic nail polish line in a playful palette of colors.

I have been wanting to try this line with Ms. T and finally picked up this cute set yesterday at The Purple Goose.  The set includes two polishes in LOL (a shimmery hot pink) and Pinkie Promise (bubble gum pink), plus a bottle of their Piggy Paint Remover for $26.  They carry other color sets and sell individual bottles for $9.  FYI, I spied a hip green color for St. Pattie's Day too!

I'm curious to see how durable and long-lasting this nail polish will be.  So check back here shortly for our Mom-tested, Ms. T-approved review!  Looking forward to fancying up some digits on Valentine's Day!

We Heart Hearts

Hearts are big in our home.  And not just for Valentine's Day.

I have heard rumors that certain somebodies don't believe in the idea of Valentine's Day. Seriously? My thought is any holiday that gives us an excuse to eat candy for a day (or two) is one to celebrate and enjoy.  Plus, it's a moment to express your love and affection for the special people in your life, big and small.  Especially the smalls.

So I've rounded up a few ideas.  Hearts to eat, hearts to wear and hearts to make.  Even one heart that you could make, wear and eat!

To Eat: Conversation Sweetheart CandiesHeart-Shaped Junior Mints, and Valentine Dots Candy all from Paper Source.

To Wear: Crewcuts Girl's Paillette Heart Tee, Gap Kids Intarsia Hat & Mitten Set, Crewcuts Boy's Heartbreaker Tee.

To Make: Marshmallow Candy Necklace from Cute Food for Kids, Crazy Crayons from Martha Stewart (kid-tested by Ms. T here!), Felt Candy Hearts from Purl Bee.

Coral & Tusk

1. Baby Cat Ballerina Doll, 2. Bunny Booties for that sweet new bebe', 3. Bunny Ears Hair Clips4. Fox Tooth Fairy Pillow, 5. Rabbit Pouch Necklace, so charming!, 6. Heart Charm (Valentine's Day is coming up...hint, hint.), 7. Hedgehog Onesie, Hedgehogs have never been so adorable!, 8. Kitty Portrait Charm

While leafing through the February issue of Martha Stewart, I came across an article about this Brooklyn textile company named Coral & Tusk.  I was immediately smitten!  They are known for their embroidered Belgian linen pillows.  One of my favorites is the Fox Tooth Fairy Pillow. Ms. T is about to lose her first tooth.  Or so she says and I was thinking I need to be ready!

Even more charming are the whimsical animal pocket dolls in an array of woodland creatures.  Priced from $69-98, these are heirloom-quality that can be passed down for generations. However, what really caught my eye were the enchanting necklace charms and felt hair clips. I can surely see Ms. T hopping around with those bunny ears!  Most definitely check out Coral & Tusk (you can order online or Red Barn Mercantile in Alexandria carries them).  I think you will be smitten too!

p.s. If you are brave enough to try your hand at embroidering yourself, Coral & Tusk designed a pattern for Martha readers.  Find it here!
